The Malmo Quay site is located in a prominent position at the mouth of the Ouse Burn on the River Tyne with views of the iconic Newcastle bridges and Quayside. Our approach was to design a scheme that acknowledged the distinctive civic character of the quayside and the domestic scale of the Ouseburn. We included locally sourced materials that were carefully selected to work at two scales – providing a monumental, monolithic appearance when viewed from afar and a fine, rich grain when viewed close up.
Our proposed house and apartment types were contemporary interpretations of the local, Tyneside-flat where homes are all double-fronted and given their own front door which opens onto a shared courtyard and communal garden.
