Clay Cross Active Leisure Centre

Project Overview

  • Project: Clay Cross Active Leisure Centre
  • Client: North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC)
  • Construction Value: £26 million
  • Status: Complete
  • Location: Chesterfield

Clay Cross Active, a new £26 million community hub delivered for North East Derbyshire District Council, officially opened its doors to the public in June 2025. Replacing the former Sharley Park Leisure Centre, the development provides a welcoming and inclusive space for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, be active, and access support.

The project forms part of the council’s wider town investment strategy, with a strong focus on long-term health, wellbeing, learning, and social connection. Located next to a well-used local park and within walking distance of the town centre, the hub is fully integrated into its surrounding community and landscape. We prioritised connectivity throughout the design, ensuring the building links seamlessly with recreational spaces, footpaths, and local transport routes.

Designed for community, with the community

From the outset, we worked closely with the council and local stakeholders to co-design a space that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Clay Cross community. The result is a tailored and flexible facility mix that supports physical and mental wellbeing while delivering wider social value.

The new hub includes:

  • A 25-metre swimming pool and learner pool
  • A four-court sports hall
  • Fitness suite and studios
  • Soft play area and Tag Active facility
  • Multi-purpose community rooms
  • NHS-standard consultation rooms
  • Citizens Advice North East Derbyshire base, offering daily drop-in support and pre-booked appointments
