Joe McDermott – Exploring the hearts and minds of Team GT3!

Describe a typical GT3 working day in the life of Joe.

I usually get into the office at around 7:30am, get set up, open my emails and whichever version of Revit I’m working in. I then continue working on specific drawing packages, producing and issuing technical information for projects. I’m part of the People Academy’s Technical Workgroup, and can usually be found drawing technical details which are then added to our Orange Book – this is a standardisation control document, which allows the practice to maintain a very high standard of quality and level of expertise across every project. Personally, I find it useful because it aids my package work on projects – defining the good things about it and making clear the improvements that are needed for the process to function as efficiently as possible.

Why did you follow your chosen career path?

I decided to delve into this career path because I felt understimulated in my previous profession. I felt that I had reached my ‘ceiling’ as a bricklayer and had no real chance of progression. I then started looking at different professional roles within construction and Architectural Technologist seemed best suited to my experience and skill set. It’s also nice to be working indoors during winter!

Before working at GT3 what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

It was probably my very first job – I started working for a farmer on evenings and weekends when I was 13. I got paid £20 a week and did this until I left school at 16. It was just a pocket-money job really, but I loved it and it taught me a lot in terms of work ethic. It was also how I learned to drive!

Do you have a favourite quote?

“Life is too short to do the things you don’t love doing” – Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)

If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?

Anakin Skywalker (just before he’s Darth Vader) – just so I could wield a lightsaber for a day and I would want to wear his Jedi robes from Revenge of the Sith.

Tell us two things most people don’t know about you…

1. I play the guitar.
2. I only like going on holidays to Disney World or on a Disney Cruise, it’s my guilty pleasure to the point where I wouldn’t entertain a suggestion of any other holiday.
