Council Auctions First Plunge in Pool at the Newly Opened Morden Leisure Centre.

Situated on the edge of Morden Park, the new Morden Leisure Centre was designed to be sympathetic to its natural environment and to respect the many archaeological and ecological issues found within the site. The new facility, which was built to replace the existing energy-inefficient and expensive centre, includes a 90 station gym, fitness studio, community space and a number of pool elements including main swimming pool, pool pod lifting platform and a learner pool with movable floor for both toddler sessions and divers. The brief was to deliver maximum benefit from a limited budget and to make sure every stage was informed by the needs of users and residents.

The client for Morden Leisure Centre, Merton Council auctioned off the ‘first plunge’ in the new pool with all proceeds being donated to the Mayor’s charities, Colour House Theatre and Friends In St Helier.

Cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said at the opening ceremony: “Today we are opening this fantastic new leisure centre which offers something for everyone, whether you want to improve your health and fitness or enjoy a family day out.

“The leisure centre has been designed around the needs and wishes of the community.  During the last year it has been incredible to watch the plans turn into a state of the art building with outstanding facilities and wonderful views across London.”
